DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIP
GBWAA 10 YEAR OLD ALL STARS-PURPLE TEAM WIN WEST MIFFLIN TOURNAMENT
The GBWAA 10 year old All Star Tournament Purple Team brought home the first place trophy from the annual West Mifflin Tournament on Sunday, July 13, 2008, beating Woodland Hills 9 – 0 in the championship game. The GBWAA team played an excellent tournament proving that strong defense is the key to a successful team.
The GBWAA 10 year olds, playing together as a team for the first time this summer, dropped the first game of the tournament 2 – 1 to a very strong Monroeville team, last year’s tournament champ. The G-Dawgs battled back in the next two games, dominating Elizabeth Township 12 – 2, and long-time rival, Penn Hills 14 – 3. In the quarter-final match against Steel Valley, the G-Dawgs came from behind in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the game 4 – 3, setting up a re-match with Monroeville in the semi-final. Against Monroeville, the G-Dawgs scored early and never looked back. Powered by excellent pitching and precise defense, the GBWAA stunned Monroeville 8 – 0. In the championship game against Woodland Hills, the G-Dawgs’ continued their impeccable pitching and defensive play, allowing only three hits in the contest, while the batters strung together hit after hit, giving the G-Dawgs the 9 – 0 victory and 1st place in the tournament. CONGRATULATIONS, 10 YEAR OLD G-DAWGS!

Congratulations to the Riverdogs for winning the girls 12U championship by defeating a very good Knights team, 15-13. Both teams should be commended for their effort and the many exceptional plays that were made. It was an outstanding season for both teams. As for the Riverdogs, the improvement from beginning to end was staggering. We were a young team and were small in size, but big in heart. The girls quickly bonded together and had fun all season. I also want to thank coaches Jack Claherty and Rob O'Brien for their commitment and work with the girls as well as the parents for their support. Team members included Jordan Bogaski, Allee Claherty, Ashley Duffy, Danielle Hall, Madison Lanetz, Madeline Leya, Mika Lipowcan, Alicia Malush, Alana Miklas, Carla Nicola, Mallory O'Brien, and Allie Watkins. You are a special group of young ladies and should be very proud of your effort. |

Even though this is related to BWFP, Doug Higgins should still be recognized on this board. When my 15U fast pitch team lost several girls at mid season, he gave up 2 quality ball players from his team to save our team from folding. I am pleased to report that all parties have been happy with this change and both teams are doing well. Doug's move showed once again that his first interest is with the girls of our league.

Last night at Little Ro, the Yankees fell behind early and had to play catch up. All the guys played their hearts out, battling back in the 6th inning to score nine runs and almost pull it out. Joey Starzynski had a great game collecting two nice hits. Andy Sopata made two great plays at second base, including catching a hard line drive, as well as sending two nice shots into the outfield. Noah Knerr had a couple great hits and a nice play in the field. Josh Louden had two nice hits and played a great second base. But the night belonged to Jared Arch. Jared made three great plays at third base and two more at pitcher's helper. He also went 3-5 at the plate. That performance earned Jared the game ball. Way to go Jared! Nice game Yankees! All the coaches are very proud of the way you played and never giving up !! |

After a late night game on Friday, the Yankees came ready to play again on Saturday. It was a tremendous team effort both offensively and defensively. The Yankees collected 26 hits and made many great plays in the field. Domenic George shined at second base making two great plays and had two nice hits. Jared Knerr played his heart out at pitcher's helper. Sean Kosslow did a fantastic job at shortstop and made a nice play in the outfield. But the night belonged to Mike 'Spike' Starzynski. After an awesome running catch in center field the night before, Mike continued his great play by making several nice catches at first base and two great plays at pitcher's helper. He also went 3 for 4 at the plate with two great shots to the outfield, almost hitting the fence at Little Ro. Mike's performance earned him the game ball. Way to go Yankees and way to go Mike !!!! |

When the Yankees battled the orange and black of the Orioles, nobody knew what would happen. A beautiful evening proved no help for our battling Yankees though. The Orioles fought hard and eventually ended the yankee winning streak. Although the Yankees tried hard at the plate, hits were scarce. The Yankee fielding however, was incredible. Jack Obrien shined at third base making great play after great play. Spectators were yelling "The Pittsburgh Pirates need a third baseman like you!" Jack also had three great plate appearences. The combination of a vacuum for a glove and smart 'at bats' earned him the game ball. Way to go Jack ! |

The Muckdogs pulled out a come from behind win on Saturday against their rivals from West Mifflin. Thanks to Morgan Geyers shot to the outfield with bases load and the strong pitching of Gwen Schemm the Muckdogs prevailed. This game was a perfect example of why you never quit!!! |

Wednesday night the Yankees battled hard against the mighty Braves. The game was fierce and close the entire way. All the players did their best including Jack O'brien who went 2-4 with a clutch hit to drive in 2 runs. Andy Sopata got his first 2 doubles of the season, also driving in 2 runs. (He must like the new bat). Tyler pogany got his first chance at first base and made several nice plays. Luke Smith led the team by going 4-5 at the plate, and made several nice plays in the field including a great running catch deep in the outfield!! That performance earned Luke the game ball. Great job Yankees ! Keep up the good work !! |
