GBWAA Tournament Policy

Applicability: GBWAA participating players in all leagues (except Co-Ed Instructional).

Tournament Support: GBWAA encourages and supports tournament play. It offers our youth a chance to compete at a higher level, and also provides participants additional game experience. GBWAA will sponsor tournament teams by providing insurance, uniforms, baseballs, and funding for registration fees.

Uniforms: Each GBWAA team participating in tournaments will wear the same uniforms, no exceptions, to present and project a league identity to others while participating in tournaments. Players will be responsible for purchasing gray long athletic pants.

Participation Fee: Players selected for tournament teams shall pay a $50.00 participation fee. The $50.00 fee shall be paid prior to tryouts or upon selection to the team, whichever event comes first. Players cannot participate until monies are paid in full, no exceptions. Monies will be paid to the Association, and used to offset GBWAA's tournament support costs. If participation extends beyond 2 tournaments, those players participating in the tournament will absorb tournament registration costs.

Tournament Fund: Beginning in 2005, money raised in previous year from in-house tournaments will be placed into the tournament fund. GBWAA will offer $450/per team to offset costs to any tournament team participating. Tournament teams must be approved by GBWAA executive board. In addition, GBWAA will require all parents of tournament teams to work concession stands of in-house tournaments.

Sponsorship: Any sponsorship monies raised for the purpose of sponsoring tournament teams will be returned to GBWAA and placed in the general account for capital improvements at GBWAA fields and facilities. However, if a team participates in more than two tournaments, sponsorship monies raised for these tournaments (i.e., tournament #3 and beyond) can be used to offset tournament registration costs.

Eligibility: In order to participate on any tournament team, you must meet said requirements:
1. signed up for GBWAA and played in-house ball
2. played in 70% of regular season games
3. not be on vacation during tournament season

Process:

1. The Tournament Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that the process outlined in this policy is followed. The Tournament Coordinator has final decision authority on all aspects of tournament play.

2. Any manager or coaches deviating from the process will not receive GBWAA tournament support as indicated, and will not be permitted to manage in the GBWAA.

3. Prior to the mid-point of the regular season, the Tournament Coordinator will be responsible for scheduling a meeting with all managers to discuss all aspects involved with fielding a tournament team. At this meeting, managers will determine the level of interest in managing and fielding a team or teams, and the age level of the team(s). For example, there may be enough interest among the managers to field 2 teams, and participate in a 9 and under and 10 and under tournament, or decide to participate in only one age level, and field an A and B team.

4. After determining how many teams will be established, managers will begin the process for selecting players for the team(s), as follows:

  • a) Managers from the respective league level will select players for the team. Teams will consist of 12 players.

  • b) A player is permitted to participate on only one tournament team, no exceptions.

  • c) Managers from each team will select up to 4 players to participate on the team, or in try-out sessions if needed. Before nominating a player, managers should contact the parents to determine interest, and player availability during the month of July. If it is known that a player will be on vacation during any part of the tournament season, that player shall not be selected to participate.

  • d) Under certain circumstances (e.g., number of teams in a league, number of teams to be established, number of available "all-star" caliber players), the number of players selected from each league team may be adjusted upward or downward (e.g., 2 or 3 per team, or possibly 5 from a quality team). The Tournament Coordinator has decision authority to adjust the number of players selected per team. Selection shall be based on performance in the first half of the regular season, practice and game attendance, attitude, and effort.

  • e) If try-outs are needed, 2 tryout sessions will be held, with the managers from the respective league selecting the activities to be held at the tryouts, and conducting the tryouts

  • f) Players must attend at least one of the two tryout sessions. Only extenuating circumstances (e.g., death in the family, illness) that cause a player to miss both tryout sessions will be considered when determining whether or not the player will remain eligible for team selection.

  • g) Votes shall be cast for players based on their performance in the first half of the regular season, practice and game attendance, attitude, and effort, as well as their performance during the tryout sessions. Tryout sessions should be viewed as an opportunity for those managers who have not personally managed a player(s) from another team, to become familiar with the abilities of the player(s).

  • h) Selection shall be done by a balloting process, with each manager ranking all participating players 1 through the total number of players (i.e., a player ranked 1 is considered by the manager as the best player, a player ranked 2 is considered the 2nd best player, and so on). After ballots are cast, points by player are calculated, and the players with the 12 lowest point totals are on the team.

  • i) Multiple ballots may need to be cast to break any ties. For example, if players ranked 11 through 15 receive the same number of points, then only those players will again be ranked to fill the 11th and 12th spots. For example, the 5 players (ranked 11 through 15) would be ranked by all managers 1 through 5, with a ranking of for the best player of the 5, and so on. The 2 players with the lowest point totals fill roster spots 11 and 12, completing the roster.

  • j) If more than 1 team is to be put together, all players not selected for the 1st team will be eligible for selection to the 2nd team, with new ballots cast.

  • k) The manager of any said tournament team will ultimately have final say in kids on team, as long as they are from the list of players selected by all managers.

5. If necessary, the Manager of the tournament team will also be selected by a ballot of all Managers in the respective league level. The process as outlined in 4 (h) above will be followed for selection of the Manager. Multiple ballots may need to be cast to break any ties. Once selected, the Manager selects 3 Coaches (i.e., other Managers in the respective league) to assist with the tournament team.

6. Practices for tournament play should begin after teams are selected, and shall not conflict with regular season games or in-house all-star games.

The GBWAA Executive Committee reserves the right to modify this policy if changes are in the best interests of the Association and its players.
